arc, with two end-plates energized by a common negative voltage referred to the central arc. Note that these are actually experimental results for a real central uranium arc, operating at about 50 volts, for more than 100 tests, at total arc currents of 1-100 amperes. The floating cylinder was about 4 feet in diameter, and the negatively energized circular end-plates were separated by about 3 feet. The voltage of the discharge to the insulated cylinder was nearly equal to that of the discharge to the end-plates (see Figs. 2 and 3, ref. 2) until that voltage exceeded (e/c28mj)H2r2, mj being the molecular weight of the ion. Then the voltage of the insulated cylinder remained constant at (e/28m4)H2rg as the voltage of the end-plates was raised further. The ion current at the insulated cylinder was equal to the total ion current received by the end-plates. When the cylinder was made up of radial slats, the deposit of ions was found on one side of the slats only, the other side being absolutely clean. This result, that the ion current to the insulated cylinder remains equal to one half the total ion current from the central arc, if the voltage applied to the endplates is high enough, seems quite inexplicable according to the theory advanced by Simon and Rosenbluth.13'8 Looking at Figure 2 of their paper,' we see that they take the radius of the outer wall of their "cyclotron" as infinite, whereas it should have a finite radius. Chapter VII of a recently published book9 gives the results which check my own findings and are thus in sharp disagreement with those of Simon and Rosenbluth. l Simon, Albert, and Marshall N. متن کاملOn Plane Waves for Mode-I Crack Problem in Generalized Thermoelasticity
A general model of the equations of generalized thermoelasticity for an infinite space weakened by a finite linear opening Mode-I crack is solving. The material is homogeneous and has isotropic properties of elastic half space. The crack is subjected to prescribed temperature and stress distribution. The formulation is applied to generalized thermoelasticity theories, the Lord-Şhulman...
متن کاملDiffraction of flexural waves by cracks in orthotropic thin elastic plates. I Formal solution
The problem of flexural wave diffraction by a semi-infinite crack in an infinite orthotropic thin plate is considered. Such models have application to the ultrasonic non-destructive inspection of thin components, such as aeroplane wings. For simplicity, the plate is modelled using Kirchhoff theory, and the crack is chosen to be aligned along one of the principal directions of material orthotrop...
متن کاملPropagation of Crack in Linear Elastic Materials with Considering Crack Path Correction Factor
Modeling of crack propagation by a finite element method under mixed mode conditions is of prime importance in the fracture mechanics. This article describes an application of finite element method to the analysis of mixed mode crack growth in linear elastic fracture mechanics. Crack - growth process is simulated by an incremental crack-extension analysis based on the maximum principal stress c...
متن کاملMoving Three Collinear Griffith Cracks at Orthotropic Interface
This work deals with the interaction of P-waves between a moving central crack and a pair of outer cracks situated at the interface of an orthotropic layer and an elastic half-space. Initially, we considered a two-dimensional elastic wave equation in orthotropic medium. The Fourier transform has been applied to convert the basic problem to solve the set of four integral equations. These set of ...
متن کاملWave Propagation in an Elastic Solid with a Line of Discontinuity or Finite Crack*
With the aid of integral transforms, a method is presented for solving the problem of scattering of plane harmonic compression and shear waves by a line of discontinuity or crack of finite width embedded in an elastic medium of infinite extent. When the incoming waves are applied in an arbitrary direction, the scattered-wave field may be determined by separating the crack-surface boundary condi...
